OPEN WATER

Open water swimming is a growing sport in British Columbia, with swimmers tackling both organized events and individual challenges. Currently, we are putting together an open water committee to further support open water swimming in BC. If you are interested, contact our Open Water Swimming Chair: openwater@msabc.ca

BC swimmers have a growing number of local races to choose from, however many BC swimmers challenge themselves to international swims such as the Alcatraz Swim and the English Channel. Locally, a few favourite swims include Thetis Lake Swim for MS, races put on by the Vancouver Open Water Swim Association, the Big Effort Swim at Christina Lake, and the Across the Lake Swim

We continue to document and maintain records of marathon swims by British Columbians and in our BC waters. If you would like your swim officially observed or ratified or know of someone who should be added to our records, please contact us.

Marathon swims are generally defined as non-stop swims in open bodies of water of at least 10 km (6.2 miles) in distance. This distance is accepted by the International Olympic Committee, World Aquatics (formerly FINA), many national swimming federations and the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, although some define a marathon swimming distance as 15 miles, 25 km or 20 miles. It can also refer to ultra-marathon swims of distances greater than 10 kilometres.
